The Challenge
In this high-profile, precedent-setting medical class action, our client needed an information management solution to track 10 000 claimants’ contact, employment and medical records dating back to 1930. This case was unique in that two facets needed to be processed and managed simultaneously. There was the standard documentation involved in the legal action and 10 000 claimants’ dynamic profiles.

Email overload
The Challenge
Assist a client with sorting through millions of emails contained in 1100 email accounts
The Response
The emails in the 1100 email accounts – including meta data such as email date, parties, subject – were bulk uploaded into Docwize. Emails appearing in more than one email account were deduplicated. Attachments to emails were extracted and non-searchable PDF attachments OCR’ed to make them searchable.
The Result
Within a few days the legal team and technical experts had access to 5 million emails. The Docwize search functionality gave them the ability to find information they were looking for almost instantaneous.
The functionality available in Docwize, enabled users to:
- View emails by clusters of subjects
- Link emails and documents to issues
- Capture review notes
- Annotate and redact documents
Track the team’s review progress - Create trial bundles

Processing high volumes of drawings for a construction matter
The Challenge
Track design changes made to 50 000 drawings as well as the approval history thereof
The Response
-
The 50 000 drawings plus related transmittals were uploaded into Docwize
- from the drawings, revision dates and details
- from the transmittals:
- who the drawings were sent to and when
- the reason for issue and status of the drawings
- the date of response and comments
Timelines were generated to highlight the flow of information and turn-around times.

Case Study
Analysing SCADA records for an intricate engineering matter
The Challenge
A major failure occurred at a plant designed by our client. Our client required a detailed analysis of all SCADA records as well as the servicing and maintenance paper trail to ascertain how the plant had been operated and whether that was the reason for the failure.
The Response
The case involved analysing SCADA records containing more than 500 000 000 data points. The records were collated, processed and made available for reporting and dashboards. A timeline was created to demonstrate the events as they transpired per second for the 24 hours before the failure. Visual analytics was used to represent this visually.
The Result
The critical visual representation of per second fragments enabled our client’s legal team to substantiate their claim that inappropriate maintenance and operation and not design issues were the cause of the plant’s failure.
